Meet William "Bill" Murray

MBA CFA Entrepreneur and Investment Executive 


Bill Murray is an investment professional with a 25-year track record of partnering with business owners and co-investors to execute on long-term, responsible growth strategies, bringing benefits to investors, employees and communities in in a wide variety of industries across Canada. Over the course of his career, Bill has advised on and led over two dozen M&A transactions, underwrote hundreds of equity financings raising several billion dollars and has been a founding partner in highly-successful investment banks, investment teams and private equity funds.

 

Following his MBA, Bill began his career as an Associate in the Investment Banking team at First Marathon Securities Ltd. Bill was part of a two-person team, that had responsibility for the health care sector throughout Canada and all other non-resources sectors throughout Quebec. The team acted in hundreds of financings including being lead underwriter in several successful IPOs, prospectus offerings and private placements. This included sectors such as biotechnology, aerospace, rail carriers, technology, telecom and consumer products. 


Following the acquisition of First Marathon by National Bank, Bill joined Dlouhy Investments (later Versant Partners) as the firm’s first ever investment banker as a Managing Director and Partner. The team at Versant Partners (“Versant”) quickly built a top three healthcare investment banking practice in Canada, raising several hundred million dollars in over 50 financing transactions in the sector. During his seven years there, Bill invested in every round of financing to become the second largest shareholder at Versant and, as a member of the management committee and executive team, helped successfully expand the firm’s coverage to several other sectors including mining, energy, aerospace, technology and industrial and consumer products. During that time, Versant grew its equity book value over 7x and was later acquired by the large US investment bank, Cantor Fitzgerald.

 

Bill was a Managing Director at other leading Canadian investment banks in Toronto and continued to underwrite financings and act as M&A advisor in a broad range of sectors. While at ATB Capital Markets, Bill led the proposal and won the mandate to manage the sale of Wolf Trax Micronutrients Inc., an agricultural nutrient company. The process he led resulted in the company receiving over 25 executed NDAs, 7 firm acquisition offers and eventually negotiating the $95 million sale to Compass Minerals. This transaction was awarded the CVCA Deal of the Year (Venture) in 2014. 


Bill moved into private equity in 2015 by joining Ardenton Capital as a Managing Director in Toronto, the first employee in Eastern Canada. There, he built a team of six investment professionals to source, analyze and execute acquisitions in the lower mid-market in Eastern Canada and the Northeast USA. The team successfully completed seven acquisitions in two years. One company was recently sold to a multinational, generating a cash-on-cash return of over 5x in six years. Bill served as a director and partner to management of several of the companies to develop detailed strategic plans and reporting packages to accelerate growth and profitability. 


In 2018, Bill became an advisor and founding LP investor in a new private equity LP called Etana Capital. He advised the General Partner on the initial investment into a customized metal parts manufacturer in Quebec in 2019. In 2023 this company recapitalized at an equity valuation of 5x in just four years, allowing Etana to raise commitments of $50 million for its flagship fund, which Bill remains an LP investor in. 


Bill recently served as a Vice President at a multi-billion family office executing direct private equity investments and working with the partner companies on their growth plans, capital structures and reporting packages. He was also the CFO of an agrifood company in Toronto where he led the Finance, HR and IT teams as it grew from $13 million in sales to $120 million in just four years. 


Bill holds his BSc. in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska (high-distinction) and an MBA from McGill University (distinction). He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder and a proud member of the Mohawks of Kanesatake First Nation.
